SO this one is going to be a movie review because I watched 3 movies today (chronic illness besties you know whats up) No spoilers really, just my reaction to the movies without getting to gnarly specific.
First movie was In a World by Lake Bell who I LOVE okay this is a girlies freakin girl she is so weird and awk and so funny always but especially in this film. She plays the daughter of a 'famous' voice actor who wants to be one herself. She is a very talented voice actor in real life so maybe its a smidgen autobio??? idk I have only seen her in a few things but she crushed this! It follows her trajectory getting rolls and her contention with her dad and sister, her collauges and Dimitri Martin (!!! also so cute and awk such good chemistry those two) Really nice arcs for the characters and beautiful portrayal of relationships. Her with her sister as she sneaky helps her sister and her brother in law fix their relationship (also its silly and weird like she tries to get sister code to be a thing its CHARMinq) Really heartfelt movie with very funny people doing sweet and funny things. Ironically the sound quality was lacking from time to time. Shot well and edited well! Honestly this movie was cozy and lovely and a truly fun watch.
Second film was Mike Bribigila's Sleep walk with me where he sort of turned his special into a movie. It wasnt as funny as the special but only because he played up the realness of what he went through coming into standup. Also because the actual events arent that funny. They are moving and wonderful and painful and real. The jokes he makes about jumping out a window because of his sleep disorder are inCREDIBLE but the story itself is just his journey of self discovery and figuring out how to do his life. Very sweet beautiful film that also has a really different structure than most movies. Really enjoyable and satisfying to watch. I did already watch the standup special and heard him talk at lengths about this so I also am not just watching it a la carte you know i had a ton of precursor going into it. Another very wonderful film, interesting and different.
Third film was probably my favorite okayyy it was Standing up, Falling down with benny schwaaa and billy crystal. Beautiful stunning story about friendship and the human experience and comedy and tragedy and chefs KISS okay cheffedy kiss. Ben Schwartz is just a fantastic actor and they need to cast him in more things. This was the first roll I saw him as the lead in i think and goddamn i need more okay I NEED more. Watching him play against billy crystal also is such a delicious treat. Ben plays an aspiring stand up who has to return home bc he is kind of failing out a bit. Lovely relational stories between the sister and the family it was just warm and cozy and tragic and beautiful. Also very funny! Lots of wonderful jokes. I will say I dont like the stand up that was writted for him. Every bit of his stand up felt so forced bc he is an improvateurrrre he is a silly billy bo bingo and to hear him do like typical stand up was a bummina. I like need him to slap a breifcase away and say stuff like if you just pass it to my hand itll be easy to grab you know its just better that way. I want from him to now know how to draw a cow. All that to say though he was good at it its just not what I want from him. Lovely story with lovely rich characters and a beautiful snapshot of that life. Also (billy's character is complex and has a past where he hurt alot of people) and it was really refreshing to see that type of character make a new friend who he can be genuinely good friends with and also see the people who will never forgive him for the way he treated them. Too often with stories like this the people who are the cut outers are villainized and made to seem heartless and bitter. It was real and it was noice.
I give the Lake Bell movie 7 of 10 (pacing, sound quality, and plot were not 100%)
birbigs gets an 8 of ten (his hair was bad for most of it and it wasnt as funny as the special)
Benny schwa gets a 9 of 10. (benny schwa stand up not being amazing as he can be)
2 points available for each for cinematography (costuming included), editing (sound too), plot (pacing), writing, and acting
Okay! thanks for reading and I'll be watching more movies soon I bet!
